The story of A Young Patriot is primarily that of Joseph Plumb Martin: Joseph was unfailingly cheerful and outgoing, the sort of person who made friends easily and who liked to talk, a habit that sometimes got him (like his father) into hot water with those in charge. His adventurous spirit often led him into dangerous situations, but it never seems to have dulled his curiosity or fascination with the world around him.
