Louis J. Freeh

In the following viewpoint, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Louis J. Freeh argues that the FBI needs expanded powers in order to respond to terrorism effectively. According to Freeh, additional resources and personnel will enable the FBI to investigate groups and individuals that advocate the use of deadly violence. In addition, Freeh asserts, the FBI can use its skills to respond to terrorist acts after they occur and help apprehend those who committed the crimes. This viewpoint was written prior to the April 1996 passage of the “Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996,” which included $1 billion to help federal and state authorities fight terrorism.
