Life After Dropping Out

Life after dropping out is difficult. With their lack of education and skills, dropouts are unable to find good, well-paying jobs. They are often concentrated in low-level positions, such as laborers or service workers. Even more discouraging, dropouts are almost twice as likely as graduates to have no job at all. One girl who dropped out of school says,

At first I thought, OK, I'll go get a full-time job. But . . . didn't have any skills that I needed to do those jobs. And the bad thing was, these jobs were simple. I mean, a secretary's job . . . you think, all I have to do is go in there and type. But if you don't know how to type, you find yourself paying for course which, if you went back to school, it's free.

The key word in her statement is skills: Good jobs today.....
