Most sports require athletes to be aggressive on the field. Some athletes carry their aggression off the field as well, acting violently toward women. A number of sociologists and women’s advocates assert that because athletes are required to be aggressive, they commit acts of sexual violence at a higher rate than the general population. These experts point to research that indicates that both amateur and professional athletes are frequently charged with sexual assault. For instance, a 1994 study by researchers at Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst found that while male athletes made up 3.3 percent of the student population at ten large colleges, they represented 19 percent of the men charged with sexual assault on the campuses from 1991 to 1993.
