Satanic ritual abuse (SRA) is a serious problem in the United States; however, the victims' claims of SRA are dismissed by many as hoaxes or a form of mass hysteria. Those who advocate the "mass hysteria" theory refuse to accept firsthand accounts of abuse by the children or adults who were victimized because they claim their memories are unreliable. The only eyewitness testimony that mass hysteria theorists would believe is that of former Satanists; however, since the mass hysteria believers refuse to accept the existence of Satanists, not even their testimony would be believed.
