———, Hip Hop America. New York: Penguin Books, 1998. This is a great book on rap music issues and history. George is an entertaining and fairly accessible author who puts many of the most heated debates in rap music in historical and cultural perspective.
Tricia Rose, Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America. Hanover, NH: Wesleyan University Press, 1994. This is one of the finest books available on issues in rap music. Too complex for young adult readers, it is however an excellent background resource.
