Bertram Wolfe
Bertram Wolfe, a former president of the American Nuclear Society and a former general manager of General Electric’s nuclear energy division, is a consultant in Monte Sereno, California. In the following viewpoint, Wolfe argues that future population growth will lead to sharply increasing demands for energy. Wolfe contends that because of the environmental problems associated with fossil fuels, the United States should meet this growing energy demand with nuclear energy, which he says is a proven and reliable energy source. Wolfe asserts that nuclear energy plants meeting U.S. standards have an untarnished safety record and that the storage of nuclear waste is a manageable problem. Wolfe contends that issues of safety and storage should not prevent government from increasing the supply of nuclear energy.
