Disciplinary Spanking Should Be Banned

Nadine Block

Corporal punishment such as spanking can lead to child abuse and should therefore be banned, claims Nadine Block in the following viewpoint. Support for a ban on spanking comes from research showing that children who are spanked display aggressive and other antisocial behaviors, suggests Block. Moreover, she argues, research demonstrates that the children of parents who reason with them as a method of discipline score higher on cognitive tests than those who are disciplined using corporal punishment. Block is director of the Center for Effective Discipline and co-chair of End Physical Punishment of Children (EPOCH).
