The Catholic Church's Response to Child Sexual Abuse Is Adequate

Stephen J. Rossetti

According to Stephen J. Rossetti in the following viewpoint, the Catholic Church has responded in the best interests of the children when handling cases of child sexual abuse. For example, Rossetti claims that the church has reassigned priests accused of child sexual abuse to supervised positions. Unfortunately, Rossetti argues, an uninformed public has pressured the church to dismiss such priests, an action that would release child abusers into society unsupervised, which could result in an increase in cases of child sexual abuse. Rossetti is a psychologist and president of St. Luke Institute, a private Catholic psychiatric hospital serving clergy. He is also a consultant to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ ad hoc committee on child sexual abuse.
