William Sealy Gosset

1876-1937

British research chemist and statistician who in 1908 derived the first exact distribution of sample statistics—the probable error of a mean—suitable for statistical analysis of samples met in experimental work.

Gosset, who worked for the Guinness brewery company in Dublin, published under the name of "Student." His ideas were subsequently incorporated into a fullfledged theory of experimental design and analysis by Ronald Fisher.
