Vladimir Gershonovich Drinfeld

1954-

Ukranian-born mathematician who introduced quantum groups. A brilliant and prolific mathematician, Drinfeld proved an important example of the Langlands conjecture, introducing many deep new ideas.

In 1985 Drinfeld (and, independently, the Japanese mathematician Jimbo) introduced the idea of quantum groups. Quantum groups have since proved enormously important in both mathematics and physics. Drinfeld was awarded a Fields Medal in 1990 for his groundbreaking work.
