Turkey—Profile

(2001 est. pop. 66.5 million). Turkey, officially known as the Republic of Turkey (in Turkish, Turkiye Cumhuriyeti), is the European gateway to Asia, one reason that the region has been home to so many cultures and civilizations since at least 6500 BCE. The country is situated in southeastern Europe and in the peninsula of Asia Minor in western Asia. The European part of Turkey is known as Thrace (Trakya), and the Asian part as Anatolia (Anadolu). Rectangular in shape, Turkey covers 780,580 square kilometers, with almost all of the land (approximately 97 percent) located in Asia. Turkey is 1,660 kilometers.....
