Ted Kaczynski

1942

AKA: Unabomber, Junkyard Bomber

Terrorist and Murderer

A brilliant mathematician, Ted Kaczynski struck out into the Montana wilderness after a brief stint as a professor. From his rustic shack he carried out a seventeen-year bombing campaign that killed three and wounded twenty-three others, resulting in one of the largest manhunts in U.S. history.

Boyhood in chicago

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Theodore “Teddy John” Kaczynski was the first son of Theodore Richard “Turk” and Wanda Theresa Kaczynski. When Ted was seven, his brother David was born. Three years later, the family moved to suburban Evergreen Park. Reports about the Kaczynski household vary greatly. According to some, including parents David and Wanda as well as some friends and neighbors, family life in the Kaczynski household was stable and loving. Others, including Ted, describe the family as dysfunctional and hurtful. The senior Kaczynskis were determined to ensure that their sons would succeed in school. Both boys were dedicated and exceptional students, although Ted would later complain bitterly that his parents had pushed them too hard to perform academically.

Reports about Ted’s boyhood temperament also vary widely. Some friends and neighbors describe him as a shy but well-adjusted boy.
