Sir Arthur Harden

1865-1940

English biochemist who shared the 1929 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Hans von Euler-Chelpin for research on the process of fermentation and its relationship to metabolism.

Harden studied at the University of Manchester's Owens College before traveling to Germany to complete his Ph.D. He served for many years as a lecturer and professor, but was best known for his research on the fermentation of sugar by yeast juice, which significantly advanced the study of metabolism. He was knighted by the British crown in 1926.
