Shack August Krogh

1874-1949

Danish physiologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1920 for his research into the regulation of circulation in the capillaries.

Although the prevailing belief was that blood flowed continuously through all the capillaries, Krogh thought that it would be more efficient for some capillaries to close while a muscle or organ was at rest. His work on circulation, blood volume, and oxygen supply led to a better understanding of total body metabolism.
