Sergei Petrovich Novikov

1938-

Russian mathematician who was educated at Moscow University and received his Ph.D. in 1964.

He held many prestigious positions at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, Moscow University, and the Academy of Sciences in the USSR. Beginning in 1966 he became affiliated with the University of Maryland. He received a Fields Medal in 1971 for his work in mathematical systems, dynamical systems, and the Novikov conjecture. He is a recipient of many other international awards, including from the Academy of Sciences in the USSR and the National Academy of Science in the United States.
