Galileo, the seventeenth-century astronomer and mathematician, was the first to see the moons of Jupiter.
Using a telescope that he developed, Galileo observed four moons orbiting the planet. This discovery was not well received by the scientific community, as most believed that all objects in the heavens revolved around the Earth. Galileo also plotted the phases of Venus and observed sunspots.
