Robber, Murderer
In the 1930s Pretty Boy Floyd emerged as an American folk hero, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) believed he was a key figure in a Kansas City massacre that claimed five lives, including FBI agents and gangster Frank “Jelly” Nash. Floyd fiercely denied having taken part in the killings and his involvement was never proved. The popular outlaw died following a shoot-out with FBI agents. Some claimed it was an execution-style slaying.
Charles Arthur Floyd was born on February 3, 1901, in the Cookson Hills of Oklahoma, an area that had once been part of the Cherokee Nation. His father, Walter Floyd was a hardworking and generous man but was reportedly a stern guardian, as was his religious mother, Mamie Echols.
With eight children to feed, the Floyds enjoyed few luxuries. After trying to farm cotton in Hanson, Oklahoma, Walter moved his family to a farm in Sequoyah County, near Akins. As sharecroppers, the Floyds rented land to grow fruits and vegetables. They also raised chickens, hogs, and cows.
Eventually Walter put together enough money to open a general store in Akins.
