Canadian explorer who, in 1778, was the first white man to discover the area around what is now Athabasca, Canada. His explorations opened this part of the Canadian wilderness for the fur trade and helped extend British influence through central Canada. This began the process of exploiting not only the area's natural resources, but natives living there, too.
