Occupational Safety and Health Act (1970)

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (1970) was intended to reduce the incidence of personal injuries, illness, and deaths as a result of employment. It requires employers to provide each of their employees with a workplace that is free from recognized hazards, which may cause death or serious physical harm. The act directed the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) within the U. S. Department of Labor. This agency is responsible for developing and promulgating safety and health standards, issuing regulations, conducting inspections, and issuing citations as well as proposing fines for violations.
