Max Wertheimer

1880-1943

Czechoslovakian-born psychologist who founded the Gestalt school of psychology.

Gestalt psychology examined psychological phenomena as structural wholes, rather than components. While Wertheimer's early work focused on the perception of complex and ambiguous structures, his school later delved into other areas of psychology. In the 1930s, Wertheimer fled from Europe to the United States, shortly before the Nazis came to power.
