Max Noether

1844-1921

German mathematician who was one of the leaders in the study of algebraic geometry in the nineteenth century.

Following the lead of Luigi Cremona, Noether studied the invariant properties of algebraic functions during certain transformations. Noether's daughter, Emmy, followed in Noether's footsteps, conducting researches into many of the same areas of mathematics and developing general formulations of some of his more important results. Noether was physically handicapped his entire life due to an attack of polio as a youth.
