Louis Claude De Saulses De Freycinet

1779-1842

French naval officer and explorer who led a round-the-world scientific voyage from 1817-20. Freycinet entered the French navy in 1794.

In 1800 he was chosen by Napoleon for an expedition to complete surveys and natural science observations along the coast of Australia. In 1817 Freycinet embarked on an expedition around the world. His extensive account of thevoyage comprised 13 volumes and was fully published in 1844, two years after his death.
