Libbie Henrietta Hyman

1888-1969

American zoologist who authored several widely used texts and reference works on invertebrate and vertebrate zoology during the 1920s and 1930s.

Hyman received her doctorate in 1915 from the University of Chicago, where she worked for zoologist Charles Manning Child. Hyman's area of expertise was invertebrate zoology, and she became an authority on invertebrate taxonomy. She held an honorary research appointment at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and was highly regarded for her encyclopedic knowledge and elegant writing.
