Joseph Von Fraunhofer

1787-1826

German craftsman and scientist who studied and advanced the field of theoretical optics. While working as a lens grinder he learned mathematics and optical science.

He applied this knowledge to the development of optical instruments, especially telescopes. Using a prism he discovered that the spectrum of the Sun's light contains dark lines. The discovery of these lines was the first step in analyzing sun and star light to reveal the elements with which those bodies are composed.
