Joseph Henry

1797-1878

American physicist whose experiments with electricity led to the development of electromagnets, which in turn made possible the electric motor.

In honor of this work, the unit of inductance is called the henry. As first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Henry resisted congressional pressure to turn that organization into a passiverepository of knowledge, insisting that the Smithsonian also support original scientific research.
