John James Rickard Macleod

1876-1935

Scottish physiologist who shared the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine in 1923 with Frederick Banting for the discovery of insulin. Macleod was already well known for his research on carbohydrate metabolism when Banting approached him with a plan to isolate the anti-diabetes factor from the pancreas.

Macleod arranged laboratory facilities at the University of Toronto for the research carried out by Bantingand Charles H. Best. Insulin was successfully isolated and prepared in 1921.
