John Jacob Abel
1857-1938
American physician known as an authority on the chemistry of the ductless glands. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he received a pharmacy degree from the University of Michigan in 1883 and went abroad to study physiology and medicine.
He received his M.D. degree at Strausbourg in 1888. He came to Johns Hopkins in 1893 and remained there as director of the Laboratory of Endocrine Research until his death. He made numerous discoveries on the chemistry of tissues, including isolating insulin and adrenaline in crystalline form.
