Jedediah Strutt

1726-1797

English inventor who developed a ribbing machine to produce stockings. While a seemingly minor item of clothing, stockings were nearly universally used and often expensive. Strutt's invention helped make higher quality stockings available to many who had not previously been able to afford such a luxury.
