French historian who accompanied King Louis IX on the Seventh Crusade (1248-1254) to Egypt. His Histoire de saint-Louis, for which he is best remembered, chronicles Louis IX's life and provides an important account of the crusade. Joinville was originally a member of Champagne's lower aristocracy and worked his way up to expert status in the matters of court procedures.
