The relationship between Japan and the United States, which dates from the mid-nineteenth century, is complex and multifaceted. Two of its most important aspects are security and economic relations.
Relations Until World War II
When Commodore Matthew Perry forced Japan to enter into trade and diplomatic relations with the West in 1853–1854, the event was a turning point in the transformation of the Japanese political system from the shogunate to the Meiji imperial system.
