In August 1947, the British territories on the Indian mainland and the princely states that were part of these territories were partitioned between India, which inherited the much larger portion, and the newly created state of Pakistan. The antagonisms that had made it impossible to hold the raj as a single entity survive to the present day in the enduring enmity between India and Pakistan.
