Indian astronomer who, during ground-based observations in 1984, discovered additional rings in the Saturn system. While observing changes in light intensity of a star while it passed behind Saturn's rings, Bhattacharyya and collaborators noticed light dimming unexpectedly. This indicated the presence of two rings that had not been discovered in the previous three centuries of study by ground-based telescopes, space-based observatories, and interplanetary space probes.
