Gerard of Cremona Summary

Gerard of Cremona

c. 1114-1187

The most prolific translator from Arabic to Latin in the medieval period.

He went to Spain to learn Arabic, and—either by himself or in collaboration—translated over seventy major works. He also corrected the work of earlier translators, adding in missing passages and making corrections. He may have written some original works. His translations had a massive influence for hundreds of years, contributing to the revival of ancient knowledge, and the European absorption of Arabic ideas.
