George Pullman

1831-1897

American industrialist and inventor of the Pullman railroad car.

Pullman recognized the marketability of a comfortable, elegant sleeping car in the age of railroad expansion. He created his own company in 1867 to manufacture these cars and built the company town of Pullman in present-day Chicago, complete with church, community center, recreation facilities, shops, and other amenities, to create an uplifting living environment for his workers and their families.
