George Gabriel Stokes

1819-1903

Irish physicist who developed Stokes' Law, which describes the motion of a sphere in a viscous liquid.

Stokes worked with and described other problems concerning fluid flow, including the motions of and forces acting upon small bodies traveling through air and fluids such as water. Stokes's work helped set the stage for the field of fluid dynamics. Some of his equations are still in used in aircraft and ship design.
