Gaspard Monge

1746-1818

French mathematician who contributed to the study of projective geometry.

Monge not only invented descriptive geometry, but pioneered the development of analytical geometry. His name appears often in histories of the French Revolution, during which time he helped establish the metric system and the renowned EcolePolytechnique in Paris. He was granted the title Comte de Péluse by Napoleon in 1808.
