Gabriel Lamé

1795-1870

French mathematician who made important contributions in the areas of differential geometry and number theory.

Lamé also worked on Fermat's Last Theorem, engineering mathematics, and elasticity, as well as studying the properties of diffusion in crystalline solids. His work in elasticity is honored by two constants named after him, and in other branches of mathematics by the Lamé curves that bear his name.
