Jewish historian who wrote extensively on the Roman occupation of Israel and the Middle East. Originally named Joseph ben Matthias, Josephus was a member of the Pharisees, a Jewish sect that practiced strict observance of the law, and later became a Roman citizen. He wrote not only on the current events of his time, but also, in his Jewish Antiquities, documented the history of the Jewish people beginning with Creation.
