Cuban revolutionary and medical doctor
Ernesto “Ché” Guevara was born into a middle-class Argentinian family and was trained as a medical doctor. In his travels through Latin America, Guevara became convinced that the only way to alleviate the suffering of the impoverished masses of people was through armed revolution. His first experience with guerrilla warfare was in Cuba, where, together with Fidel Castro, he led a band of guerrilla fighters in overthrowing the U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista (1901–1973).
Guevara served as an official in the Cuban government for five years, after which he returned to the life of a guerrilla. He first supported revolutionary fighters in Africa, then organized a guerrilla force in Bolivia. Guevara was captured and executed by a Bolivian army squad in 1967. He continues to be revered worldwide as a revolutionary hero by those who seek justice for the poor.
Guevara was born in 1928 to a middle-class family in the city of Rosario, in the east of Argentina. He was the first son of Ernesto Guevara Lynch and Celia de la Serna.
