Efim I. Zelmanov

1955-

Russian mathematician who solved the Restricted Burnside Problem, one of the most difficult and long-lasting problems in the branch of mathematics called group theory.

Author of more than 60 research papers in mathematics, in 1994 Zelmanov was awarded a Fields Medal (the highest honor in mathematics) for his solution to the Restricted Burnside Problem. He proved that all groups of a certain type had to be finite. He has also proved many other deep results in algebra.
