Douglas Mawson

1882-1958

Australian researcher and Antarctic explorer who was one of the first to observe the changing location of the magnetic pole, and surveyed unknown areas to the west of the South Pole.

Mawson led expeditions to Antarctica and was a member of other expeditions as well. Back at the University of Adelaide, he was a respected teacher and scientist, and became a leader in the research of uranium and other minerals related to radioactivity.
