Dio Cassius Summary

Dio Cassius

c.

150-235

Greco-Roman administrator and historian whose Romanika, written in Greek, provides a valuable source regarding the latter years of the republic and the early empire. Dio served in various positions throughout the Roman world, from Africa to Asia Minor, and this aided his research in compiling Romanika, a work in 80 books. Beginning with the Roman people's mythical beginnings as descendants of Aeneas, the work chronicled Roman history through the reign of Alexander Severus (222-235), and served as a model for writings by Byzantine historians of a later era.
