David Bryant Mumford

1937-

English mathematician whose major contributions have been in the areas of algebraic surface theory and other branches of geometry.

Mumford was awarded the 1974 Fields Medal for his contributions in mathematics, largely in these areas. In particular, Mumford has helped achieve a deeper understanding of moduli, parameters that help to describe various properties of geometric objects. Mumford helped to prove that these moduli exist and to describe their mathematical structure.
