Carl Jung Summary

Carl Gustav Jung

1875-1961

Swiss psychoanalyst, at first a Freudian, but who broke with Freud in 1914 to found "analytic" psychoanalysis.

Freud believed that all neurosis is caused by sexuality, but Jung blamed it on disharmony between the conscious self and the "collective unconscious." Jung defined two basic psychological types—introvert and extrovert—and four basic psychological functions—thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuiting. His psychology has profound religious aspects. He took myths and dreams seriously as keys to the memories, symbols, and archetypes of the collective unconscious.
