Bob Bartlett Summary

Bob Bartlett

1875-1946

Canadian-American sea captain and explorer who spent his life working on and captaining sailing vessels and ships to the Arctic for exploration.

He sailed with Robert Peary as first mate on the Windward for Peary's initial attempt to reach the North Pole in 1898-99 and again on two later attempts as the captain of Peary's ship, the Roosevelt. Through these and numerous other exploratory voyages to the Canadian Arctic, Bartlett helped to gather vast amounts of scientific information about this formerly little-known region of the world.
