Bart Jan Bok

1906-1983

Dutch-American astronomer who studied the structure of the Milky Way Galaxy.

In 1947, he discovered small dark clouds that can be seen against the light of stars. He proposed that these clouds, now known as Bok globules, are made up of gas and dust that will eventually condense to form new stars. Bok, along with his wife, Priscilla, wrote an influential astronomy book titled The Milky Way in 1941.
