French microbiologist who was awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize for his contributions to discoveries concerning the genetic regulation of enzymes and viral replication. His research included studies of protozoa, patterns of biochemical evolution, growth factors in microorganisms, and the cancer-causing genes known as oncogenes. His studies of lysogenic bacteria, viruses, and his demonstration of the induction of the prophage provided the foundations for experiments in molecular biology.
