Ammonius Hermiae Summary

Ammonius Hermiae

fl. c. 500

Byzantine North African philosopher who served as director of the school in Alexandria.

A student of Proclus (410?-485), Ammonius taught Eutocius of Ascalon (c. 480-c. 540), who dedicated his commentary on Archimedes's (c. 287-212 B.C.) On the Sphere and Cylinder to him. His own writings primarily concerned logic and the physical sciences, and a number of these works—including several commentaries on Aristotle (384-322 B.C.)—remained in widespread use among European scholars throughout the Middle Ages.
