Alphonse De Candolle

1806-1893

Swiss botanist who took on the task of completing his father Augustin de Candolle's multi-volume work on plant classification called the Prodromus.

Alphonse Candolle was president of the International Botanical Congress in 1866 and in thiscapacity was instrumental in the publication of the first of the international rules for the naming of plants. His other significant project was a two-volume work on plant geography, on how climate and terrain affect the distribution of plants.
